Vegas Mate ★★★☆☆ ($1.99 / App Store) for the iPhone is a Las Vegas tourist guide. Despite the ugly and outdated user interface, the amount of hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows and nightclubs with extensive details makes up for that. Vegas Mate has user reviews of all the events and venues from real people, photos (not professional) and a map system that will come in very handy. For a “Vegas” app, you would expect a lot of flash but its still worth it for the usable information it contains.
iTrans NYC Subway ★★★★★ ($3.99/ App Store) for the iPhone is a Google Maps like app for the MTA New York City Subway. It can even be mistaken for a Google made product - that’s a very good thing. There are many other NYC subway map apps with varying styles but iTrans is the most usable, accessible and efficient. It features timetables, off/online service advisories, push alerts and even walking directions to any subway stop. Unlike Google Maps or any other map apps, this does not require a data connection to fully work. Some of the other MTA map apps for the iPhone use a proprietary maps design which some look cool but can be confusing - but iTrans use the official licensed map which is the same you see plastered everywhere.
Jets - Flight & Seat Advisor ★★★☆☆ ($2.99 / App Store) for the iPhone is a visual guide to most airline jet seats. Its like a handy seating chart for commercial planes with tips, cons, pros and other details to help you decide the best seat and area to book. Although very well designed with a slick user interface, the flight board feature is unstable and data for Delta is consistently incorrect. But if your a frequent flyer, this deserves a spot on your iPhone - a great companion to the Flight Card app.
Word Lens ★★★★☆ ($.free / App Store) for the iPhone is a real time video camera language translator. Point at a sign, menu or most readable text with your iPhone camera and Word Lens will magically translate those words right on the image your viewing from! It works as advertised. But this is one of those apps people give bad reviews to because they don’t read the entire app description before downloading - the app is free and will work on reversing words but the actual translating costs $9.99 from Spanish to English and vise versa. While it seems expensive, its not because of how well it actually works.
Flight Card ★★★★☆ ($4.99 / App Store) for the iPhone is a gorgeous flight tracking app and boarding pass accessory. Flight Card will update the vital details of your flight in an exceedingly simple yet beautiful and highly effective manner to make your travels that much easier. The app tracks over 90,000 flights daily on 1,500 airlines with 16,000 airports - so it should cover just about any flight you need to take. Because of the premium price tag, Flight Card may be best for frequent riders but it still is a great travel app.
Localscope ★★★★☆ ($1.99 / App Store) for the iPhone is a social, web and GPS powered navigation app. Search for just about anything of which can be viewed from 3 unique perspectives: list, Google map or augmented reality. The latter being more than just a novel gimmick but a potentially powerful tool to find where your going in the most direct way possible. For such a complex app, its quite easy to use and a joy to look at.
